How To’s - La Crosse Floral

We are happy to assist you with the care and preservation of your flowers!

Care For Cut Flowers

Certain varieties of cut flowers last longer than others.  For example, carnations can remain vibrant for long periods of time.  Roses are much loved for their beauty and aesthetic, but have a shorter life in vases.  When buying flowers from La Crosse Floral, be sure to talk with our staff about how long your arrangement should last, and what you can do to prolong the life of your arrangement.

The Importance of Floral Food

Floral food is a combination of additives that help nourish your flowers while discouraging bacteria from growing in the water.  It is one of the best and easiest ways to extend the life of your flowers.  However, it’s important to follow the instructions on the package, because improperly mixed floral food can do more harm than good.

A Few Essentials for Healthy, Long Lasting Flowers

Keep your flowers in a cool place (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 18 to 22 degrees Celsius), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, and the tops of televisions.  (Most appliances like televisions can give off heat, causing flowers to dehydrate.)

When your flowers arrive in wet floral foam, keep the foam soaked in water that contains the floral food that was provided.  Be sure to follow the directions on the package.

When your flowers are arranged in water, keep the vase filled with water along with the floral food provided.  If the solution turns cloudy, replace it entirely.  If possible, trim the stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Remove all leaves that are below the waterline, because they will promote bacterial growth that will harm the flowers.  Place your flowers in warm water with fresh floral food to encourage flower opening.
